Surgical Innovations approached Dawson Precision Components when it needed to produce a batch of extremely precise parts produced at short notice. The specialist part were outside the company’Äôs own manufacturing expertise, so it turned to Dawson to ensure its high standards were maintained.
The first order for 200 parts came in on a Friday at the start of July with a request that they be completed by the following Monday. The nature of the instruments meant extremely high precision was required, with some of the parts being as small as 0.8mm in diameter.
Dawson worked through the weekend to complete the order on time and to specification. This was followed by further orders, taking the total up to 3000 screws, 10,000 pins and 10,000 rivets over the following few weeks.
The parts were manufactured on Citizen multi-axis turning centres. These are the most competitive option in Dawson’Äôs armoury for quantities of 50 or more components up 32mm diameter and are capable of turning both ends of a component and drilling and milling in a single cycle.
Jane Spencer, production and procurement manager, at Surgical Innovations, said: ’ÄúWe were extremely impressed by Dawson Precision Components. Right from the start they understood our requirement, gave us prompt, honest deadlines for production and stuck to them. All the precision parts were delivered to the very high quality we require to produce instruments used in laparoscopic surgery.’Äù
Dawson has a history working with the medical industry, largely producing parts for spectrometers but more recently producing parts for instruments used in the veterinary industry.
